One of my earliest lessons in navigating the stress of parenting and corporate life came when I was twenty weeks pregnant with my first child.
I had a panic attack in the middle of a yoga class, of all places.
While all the other mothers-to-be were moving through their sun salutations, I was frozen in the first posture—my face clenched, hands gripping my thighs, and tears pouring down my cheeks.
My mind wasn’t in the room. It was back at my high-tech corporate job, where I was managing communications for a voluntary layoff. We were preparing to deliver the news to employees—right before the holidays.
The Moment I Knew Something Had to Change
My chest was tight, my heart racing, and I felt cramping in my belly.
The yoga teacher noticed and knelt beside me.
She gently placed her hand on my knee and said, “Hi Jenny. Where are we? Is everything okay?”
I met her concerned eyes. “No,” I said. “I’m overwhelmed and don’t know what to do.”
She stayed with me as I spent the rest of the class in child’s pose, whispering support and guiding me back into my body.
The next day, I put my name on the list for the voluntary layoff.
I wasn’t sure what would come next. I only knew that staying was slowly breaking me.
The Weight of Over-Functioning
Looking back, I see it clearly now: I was operating at full capacity every day.
My life was a toxic blend of over-functioning, people-pleasing, and zero boundaries.
I didn’t recognize how much the load I was carrying—mentally, emotionally, and physically—was costing me. I thought I had to be perfect. I thought that was the price of being “successful.”
But the reality? My perfectionism and inability to say “no” were slowly eroding my sense of self.
Discovering Self-Compassion and Personal Growth
My path to healing was slow, non-linear, and deeply personal. But it brought me back to me.
As I leaned into personal growth, I discovered the gift of self-compassion and the magic of creating margin in my life.
I learned how to:
- Check in with myself before reacting
- Create meaningful boundaries
- Get more done—without doing more
- Feel present and capable
- Hold space for creativity and gratitude
These were the seeds of my future as a life coach, and now they’re the tools I share with others.
