Two years ago, while skiing on Spring Break, I tore my MCL and ACL and had to have surgery.
My husband’s advice was to tell the story about me flying down the mountain doing daredevil feats on a double black diamond. But the real story involves an unfortunate dismount from the ski lift.
I spent the remainder of 2024 rehabbing my knee and focusing on my fitness.
When the ski trip came around in 2025, I was ready. I enjoyed myself and felt good. But the rest of 2025 was rough.
Tough for me. Tough for one of my kids. Tough in my partnership. Tough for my clients. Tough for parents. Tough for people who vote as I do. Tough for the world….
And along the way, I found myself feeling less confident.
Even though I had already gotten back to the mountain, I was feeling more scared to ski this year. I was really questioning whether it was time to stop skiing.
But I KNEW that one of my best life experiences was being at the top of a mountain,
seeing the snow-covered top paired with the contrast of the bright blue sky,
feeling the pull of my chest as I breathed the thin air, and discovering the power of guiding my skis down the mountain.
I LOVE that view, that moment, that feeling, and I didn’t want to give that up. But I also didn’t want to be scared. So I booked myself a very expensive private lesson.
My ski coach was Kathy, a 76-year-old (!!!) expert skier who has been teaching at this mountain for more than 45 years. She is a former special ed teacher, mother of 5, grandmother of 14. She taught every kid in her church to ski. She still rides her horses several times a week. She was kind, encouraging, and specific in her guidance. She was remarkable.
During our 3-hour lesson, sometimes she led, encouraging me to watch something specific she was doing. And sometimes she had me lead, noting small improvements and acknowledging my growth.
At the end of my lesson, I definitely felt stronger as a skier.
I spent the rest of the trip feeling more connected to why I love skiing and inspired to keep showing up.
Kathy coached me by creating a safe space to explore my edges, expand my capacity, confront my fears, and achieve my goal of skiing confidently.
And it reminded me of why I love being a coach, too.
I absolutely love helping my clients get honest about their fears, have compassion for how they are truly feeling and get the support they need to achieve their goals. It’s a beautiful process!
