A million years ago, I was a Friday night person. I had more energy on Friday at 3 p.m. than any other part of the week. Bring it on, I’d say!
Going out on Friday night was a great way to cut loose from the workweek, connect with friends and recharge.
It was FUN self-care and it fit with where I was in life.
These days, I’m parenting two People who can’t deal with Friday afternoon. At. All.
Friday night? Forget your plans…because IT is gonna hit the fan.
The People need to be cuddled and left alone all in the same moment.
And they ask for love in “unsavory” ways.
When IT hit the fan a couple of weeks ago and I shared this photo on social media. While laying with my guy as he settled down (before the next storm), I realized that what worked for self-care in my 20’s (or even last year or last month!) doesn’t work for me now.
Can you relate?
Maybe you have a stressful job… or you are caring for a sick child or parent… or have a million other reasons why life has “shifted.”
So what do you do? How can you avoid the “unsavory” behavior of your 8-year-old self?
You give yourself a break.
You pause.
And you give yourself permission to find something that works for you NOW to recharge your batteries.
For me, I used to need a ton more social time.
Now that I work with people all day and coach clients on their “big stuff,” my needs have shifted. I need to have more alone time meditating and drinking my coffee in stillness of the morning. I have to carve out time before my kids arrive home to shift from my coaching work to my role as a parent. “Quiet time” was never on my self-care radar two decades ago. But it is essential for me now. When I don’t get it, I get depleted fast.
