Hi Friend,
When I sit down with a new client for the first time, one of my favorite questions to ask is: “What’s the one book or podcast that has shifted the way you see the world?”
It’s probably no surprise that the people who seek out coaching are usually the same ones with overflowing bookshelves, nightstand with current reads, and “Save for Later” playlists.
We are a community of seekers, constantly searching for that next spark of insight to level up our lives and careers.
Clients also ask me “What are you reading, Jenny?” which is why I keep a running tally of the titles that have earned a permanent spot on my shelf.
But here’s the kicker: I often give my clients a piece of advice that feels counterintuitive: it is okay to put the “expert” advice down.
While leadership frameworks and personal development deep-dives are incredible tools, there comes a point where we need to stop consuming other people’s opinions and start listening to our own.
If that sounds like a vacation, then this message is for you!
🌻 And summer is the perfect time to silence the input from others and focus on YOUR enjoyment and pleasure.🌻
Here’s how:
☀️ Take a break from professional development books.
☀️ Set down the self-help books.
☀️ Hit pause on the podcasts.
🪷 By choosing synthesis over information overload, your mind can rest, reflect, and make space for your own ideas to surface. 🪷
Building on the spirit of enjoyment, I’ve gathered a few fiction and memoir books that I enthusiastically recommend for a brain break.
Atmosphere, by Taylor Jenkins Reid
A can’t-put-down historical fiction romance set in the 1980s during NASA’s golden age. The characters and relationships are so beautifully written and compelling (as Taylor Jenkins Reid does so well!) If you had a fascination with real-life astronaut Sally Ride like I did – you’ll love this.
Broken Horses, a memoir, by Brandi Carlile
Brandi Carlile brings the same amazing lyrical style from her music to her life story. If you love her music like I do – you’ll love this. I recommend you listen to this one to hear her narrate it herself and perform the songs that influence her story – it’s visceral and powerful.
My Friends, by Fredrick Bachman
A story about childhood relationships that shape who we are today. Bachman is my absolute favorite author because his stories are raw, powerful, unflinching, and universally relatable. And this one doesn’t disappoint – it’s so, so good.
Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, by Gabrielle Zevin
A beautifully written story about love, friendship, ambition, and creativity – in the context of video gamers! Honestly, I would have skipped this one if I hadn’t received it from a friend, but I’m so glad I didn’t.
So there you go, my friend, my summer reading list for you.
If you have been feeling overwhelmed by a steady stream of ideas, learnings, and advice, let this be your invitation to pause and intentionally choose to immerse yourself in content you enjoy. You might be surprised with what an intentional break does for you.
With love,
Jenny
