I see it every day:
Clients don’t hire me to get better at what they are already good at. They ask for my support to improve on their perceived weaknesses.
While that is one place coaching can take us, I NEVER start there.
Whether my client is the CEO of a financial tech company, a marketing director at a consumer brand, or a solopreneur, I love to begin with their STRENGTHS.
My reasoning is simple:
If I can help a person deeply understand and appreciate how they operate best, I can help improve their confidence and problem-solving and open up new possibilities in their thinking.
Many of us are very well versed in what is NOT going right in our lives or in our workplaces.
Maybe we take our annual review of “areas of growth” to heart and focus exclusively on improving our weaknesses.
Maybe we have worked so hard to shed past habits or roles that we can’t see how far we’ve come.
Knowing and operating from our strengths is a GAME-CHANGER.
Whatever we set our mind to do, we will be most successful when we play to our strengths as often as possible.
By leaning into our strengths we may…
– feel more confident to pitch a new idea to the boss
– connect more easily with the right people for the project
– focus our time more productively (with less “spinning”)
– let go of projects or priorities that don’t align with our goals
– practice self-compassion and shift our perspective
– partner with the right person to compliment our skills
I recently had the privilege of leading a strengths workshop with a group of professionals, and it was one of my professional highlights of the year.
By the end of the workshop, these amazing participants had
- learned about their five key strengths (many with a knowing smile or a nodding head to compliment their a-ha! moment)
- claimed five more strengths where they see themselves thrive
- acknowledged and validated their co-workers strengths
It was so exciting for this coach to see. 🙂
Supporting these individuals and a team was powerful, insightful and inspiring.
“We had a blast, and the team was telling everyone at the outing how awesome Jenny was and how they all need to do it, too! I am incredibly grateful for Jenny’s kindness, patience and guidance with our group. I think it was really valuable for us each of our team members own their strengths. I also think it helped our team really see ourselves more clearly. I think most of us expected a few of our strengths, but were also surprised by others. Jenny did a spectacular job and I am so incredibly grateful that we kicked off our season of success with her! “ – Heather H, director, HR & admin
